Releasing, Not Becoming

A wise friend recently commented on my never-ending and often misguided quest to improve myself: "Valerie," he said, "maybe this isn't about becoming something different, but about releasing something that is already inside of you."

Vulnerability and openness does not come easily for me.  My ethnic background, the Pennsylvania German subculture, mirrors aspects of the honor-shame cultures of the middle east.  Revealing need, asking specifically for help, or speaking one's innermost thoughts is not commonly done.  A fear of what others might think of me has generally been an unwelcome companion in my life.

About 18 months ago, in reflecting on entering a new decade (the 40's!), the impression I had was that I was entering a new era of personal growth, effectiveness, leadership, and clarity. I also had the sense that this new season would require greater boldness, breaking peace-keeping patterns, people-pleasing, and fears from the past. Gulp.

But sometimes you reach a point when you know that your best option is forward...and you want it more than anything else.  The Kingdom is worth it.  HE is worth it.

Go on this journey with me. Follow my new blog. Struggle and grow with me, boldly and bravely.
